Best Holsters for the Ruger LCP

The Ruger LCP series of pistols is one of the most popular choices for folks looking to concealed carry a handgun today. With that said, there are a lot of different ways to carry it, with the choices for holsters getting a little overwhelming.

Here, we want to walk you through several types of holsters for the Ruger LCP, and make some recommendations on ones we think are worth checking out. We’re going to cover Inside the Waistband (IWB) Outside the Waistband (OWB), pocket, ankle, and one interesting clip holster: all of these carry methods have their use, and we’ll talk about those as we go along.

Inside the Waistband (IWB)

Inside the Waistband, or IWB, is one of the more common ways that people carry a firearm these days. Typically, this method leaves the firearm both accessible and very well concealed. The LCP is great for this since it’s already a small gun, which makes concealing it generally easier.

For this, we recommend the Ruger LCP IWB Holster from We the People Holsters. The company is awesome, making the products right here in the USA, and the kydex holster itself is of high quality.

We like that the holster has a large belt clip: that’s what keeps the gun exactly where you put it on a daily basis and will prevent the holster from coming out with the gun should you need to draw it. This is our preferred carry method, and we’ve been using their holsters for a little while, so we recommend them wholeheartedly.

If you want to learn more about what they offer, we’ve written up an in-depth and hands-on review on We the People Holsters recently.

Outside the Waistband (OWB)

Outside the Waistband holsters are attached to your gun belt, and make it much faster and easier to reach your firearm than IWB, but it can be a little harder to conceal. A lot of folks do this when they can wear a jacket or an untucked shirt. Of course, this is less of an issue with people who live in open carry states, but the rest of us do have to think about accidentally showing people a firearm in public.

LCP not pictured here, but they have LCP models

Crossbreed Dropside Holsters

For our pick here, we’re going with the Crossbreed Dropslide Holster: they’re extremely well-made holsters that work simply.

A lot of the OWB holsters on the market these days are big, bulky, and complicated. This one is a lot more simple: thread it through your belt, pop the pistol in, and you’re off for the day.

Pocket Holsters

Since the LCP is so small, it’s more than possible to carry it in a pocket. Of course, putting a loaded firearm into your pocket without some means to protect it or keep it in one spot is a bad idea, so we think it’s wise to use a pocket holster.

No matter what, when you’re carrying a gun in a pocket, we think it’s only prudent to make sure that there’s nothing else in that pocket that might interfere with the trigger, or with getting the gun out of the pocket.

DESANTIS Super Fly Pocket Holster

Desantis Super Fly Pocket Holster

Here, we’re recommending the Desantis Super Fly Pocket Holster. In terms of design, these holsters and simple and effective: the outside is sticky enough to keep it where you put it, and it covers the trigger, which makes it safe.

It also comes with a big flap of the same material that the holster is made from so that you can prevent it from printing when the whole apparatus is in your pocket.

Ankle Holsters

For some folks, carrying on their ankle is the way to go. For example, some police officers carry the LCP as a backup gun in an ankle holster. It’s also a popular option for folks who have jobs that involve a lot of sitting, making an IWB or OWB holster kind of uncomfortable.

Pro-Tech Outdoors Ankle Holster

Pro-Tech Outdoors Ankle Holster

In this case, we’re recommending the Pro-Tech Outdoors Ankle Holster: it is a simple ankle holster that straps to your leg, keeps the pistol secure, and, a feature we very much appreciate, has a back strap that keeps the gun from flying off as you walk or run.

While we don’t do much ankle carrying ourselves, a gun as small as the LCP could work very well in this application.

Wild Card

Every now and again we come across a product so interesting we feel the need to share it with you even if we’re not sold on it. In this case, we’re looking at a super minimal carry option that replaces the rear frame pin of the LCP and has you install a clip so that you can clip the LCP into your pocket like you would a knife.

Ruger LCP Techna Clip

Ruger LCP Techna Clip

While we’re a little hesitant since the design would leave the trigger exposed, the safety of the LCP should work well enough to keep you safe if you practice drawing with this clip a few hundred times without any rounds in the gun, and the design of the Techna Clip is interesting, to say the least.

These super-minimalist carry options do appeal to us, but the exposed trigger has us a little hesitant on this design.

Value Holsters

We think that everyone who wants to and legally can concealed carry ought to be able to and that economic barriers to exercising your rights are morally wrong. That, and we get that budgets are tight these days in the firearms and ammo department, so we more than understand why someone would want to buy a holster that focuses on value.

Bulldog Cases Mini LCP holster

Bulldog Cases Mini Holster

Here, we’re recommending the Bulldog Cases Mini IWB holster. It’s a simple, no-frills, fabric IWB holster that will hold your gun and keep it on your belt. It’s not the nicest one in the world, but a lot of us start carrying in very similar holsters just so we can see if IWB is for us. In every gun collector’s house, there’s a holster like this somewhere, and it probably got used a lot.

Wrap Up

Here, we’ve recommended to you a few options to carry your LCP that we think you might like. While you’re exploring these and others, you’ll likely find yourself thinking about a few different kinds of options. We think this makes sense, and we’re willing to change our kit to fit our carry needs on a given day, so pick up a few different styles and see what works for you.
