Assclown of the Ides: Rudi Gresham Follow-Up

Gresham sucked up to trusting politicians with his phony claims of SF heroism. Now photos of him with the same pols he lied to are a cornerstone of his campaign to obfuscate his fraud.

Gresham sucked up to trusting politicians with his phony claims of SF heroism. Now photos of him, doing the grip-n-grin with the same pols he lied to, are a cornerstone of his campaign to obfuscate his fraud. It’s not like PFC Gresham can stand on his real records.

Notorious Special Forces and Vietnam phony Rudi Gresham, who’s been scamming SF luminaries and the community since his undistinguished turn as a PFC, has been mounting a counterattack on the (actual) Special Forces soldiers who outed him.

Gresham hasn’t hit the rock bottom of, say, John Giduck (another unrepentant phony who had one point had a “reputation management” firm posting bogus web content stuffed with his name to try to spam his stolen valor history down below the top Google search results), but he’s done a bunch of things to discredit himself even further, so it’s time to grease the skids beneath him a little more.

He has set up a website defending himself at rudigresham.com. It has the laughable title: Rudi Gresham: A Life in Service. (In service of what? In service of the nation’s longest-running veteran impersonation, maybe.) What is there are a couple of documents indicating that General William Yarborough had believed in the 1990s that Gresham had served with him on active duty. As Gresham’s own authentic records show, that was not possible, unless General Y had a secret assignment for a clerk typist or chaplain’s assistant, the only two positions Gresham ever held.

Even if taken at face value Gresham’s testimonial documents do not prove that Gresham is the former SF officer he has claimed to have been for at least 35 years. They only prove that some real retired officers like him and still believe him — or that some dead retired officers used to. And how can anyone take any document from Gresham at face value, when he submitted forged documents (notably a fictitious DD 214) to the Special Forces Association and Special Operations Association while pursuing memberships (for which he never legitimately qualified). Anything posted by Gresham is, by default, a perjurer’s testimony, and it should be received with the same level of caution.

If Gresham were not a phony, but an actual former SF officer, really trying to clear his name, you would expect a site to include such things as an SF graduation certificate (everybody gets one, although Rudi never did, because he never attended the course), SF graduation and MOS award orders (which are preserved both at the Regiment and in the National Archives, except none exist for Gresham, because he never attended the course), testimony from former teammates and classmates (which don’t exist in Gresham’s case because, well, you have to be on a team or in a class to have mates, and Gresham never was).

You can tell when he’s lying. His lips move.

rudi with jeb and nickiThe awards Gresham has worn in public include the SF Tab, Captain, Major and Lieutenant Colonel rank, the Master Parachutist badge, and more. In the picture on the left, Gresham is wearing at least three SF insignia for which he never qualified: the SF Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (“Patch,” requires assignment to an SF unit); the SF Tab (requires individual SF qualification); and the SF Distinctive Unit Insignia (“Crest,” assignment to SF). The two politicians with him are also displaying Medal of Honor association cups, but Gresham is wearing no Medal of Honor, even though he’s just as qualified for that as he is for all the SF junk with which he’s bedecked. (You can see more pictures of these at the links below). The highest rank device Gresham ever earned was the single chevron and rocker of the Private First Class. The only qualification badge Gresham ever earned was the Parachutist Badge (often called the Novice Parachutist badge).

As a reminder, here’s a few pages on the real Rudi Gresham:

  1. Previous WeaponsMan.com coverage: Assclown of the Ides for June, 2016.
  2. The original Guardian of Valor exposé. Pay special attention to Tom Marzullo’s letter, quoted at great length. Gresham — a one enlistment, PFC chaplain’s assistant who has played ever since at being SF, former officer, and General Officer’s ADC (a position usually reserved for young officers marked for rapid advancement) — nearly got Marzullo, a no-kidding SOG recon guy, tagged as a wannabe. Note also that Gresham, like SF phony Thomas Burch, was profiting from a phony veterans charity, the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation, that seems to have existed for the sole benefit of the insiders, namely Burch and Gresham.
  3. The original This Ain’t Hell post containing Rudi’s real records.
  4. This thread at ProfessionalSoldiers.com (an SF-specific online forum and hangout) recounts some aspects of various actual SF men’s battle to expose the well-connected phony Gresham. As the site founder put it (in Post #10 of that thread):

Once Rudi Gresham aka Hans Rudolph Gresham found out that real Green Beret’s had his real military records one of his first acts was to resign his life membership in the Special Forces Association. That in itself begs the question, “Why?”

I’ll tell you why, he either resigned or he was going to be removed in an official vote. This is not the first time the SFA has had frauds in their ranks, some of the scam artists are good, real good if you were a former clerk typist…….

Note these details from Post #31:

…after several incidents involving Rudi… I was skeptical this guy was what he said. I brought it up on SF brothers and the naysayers came pouring out mostly Tom Marzullo about tailwind. Well i figured Tom was just grinding up an old wound. When the FOIA revealed the truth i was surprised, but it then all seemed to make sense. He got his VA appointment because of his political work for Bush. This was also where his false history of being an SF Officer perpetuated.

We actually disagree with this. We think his longstanding SF Officer impersonation was also key to his VA appointment.

It seems he was vetted by Canon in the 90s to the SFA but is was from more lack of verification than real vetting. A false DD214 was presented along with letters from General Officers supporting him. None of these documents were kept by the SFA . Beaver McCann the pres of SFA tried to verify him later, as well, but had the wrong SSN, so nothing came back. Nobody thought to question any of this or dig any deeper. After all, wasn’t Rudi getting money to SF projects? Not his money, mind you, other peoples’ money.

The only kind of “S F” Rudi Gresham ever was, and still is, is a Sack of Feces.

After learning about some of these guys, I think that a lot of them believe their own lies. It’s like a mental illness. How else to explain it?

    1. looserounds.com

I bet you are right. I have seen other people that lie like this at this level. They absolutely believe the lies they tell. Its like it really happened to them in their minds

Taking credit for accomplishing something you didn’t do is a pretty shitty thing.I do though have one ? having never been in the military.Any special ops folks whose records kinda disappeared/moved to a vault ect. due to new endevours military or otherwise to say protect themselves or family or military security ect.I would guess someone with that background though would be quite about their past excepting folks they shared said past with.Again, tis a shitty thing to do and would actually think perhaps also a little dangerous.

That’s a common claim by wannabes and phonies: “my service/records be classified!” and it’s always horseshit. In some circumstances, while assigned to classified duties, ones records are removed from normal handling and handled separately for security reasons, but on completion of such an assignment the records return to normal handling. If one is assigned to a classified unit, the records reflect a cover assignment.

For example, soldiers assigned to the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Special Operations Group (MAC-V SOG) were on orders to “Special Operations Augmentation, 5th Special Forces Group” at 5th SF’s then-HQ in Nha Trang. They were on the classified SOG joint manning document and did not count against 5th Group’s personnel slots, but someone without a clearance fooling around in the records would on;y find the plausible sounding cover assignment.

This precaution is rarely used and used in moderation where it is truly necessary to preserve sources, methods and ongoing operations. Afterward (like SOG) it is usually declassified in time.

There are no “Secret SF soldiers” or “Secret SEALs.” That’s a red flag of a wannabe claim. As is, usually, “there are no teammates to vouch for me because they were all killed.” Seldom happens, and when it does (think Marcus Luttrell), there’s still all the officers and men who assigned, briefed & launched the team, and recovered the survivor(s).

I have done a lot of stupid shit in my life. Lying about stuff like this is just pathological. IMHO.
Now I will cop to lying to garner some pooha though.

  5. Keith

IMHO he should be tried by a jury of his peers (former service men, because he did serve) and when found guilty he should be executed by a firing squad made up of former service men again because he did serve.

He brings dishonor on all who has, is or will serve as long as he is alive.

  6. JAFO

Off topic, but certainly an assclown: Kathleen Kane was convicted of all 9 counts today.

Perjury is generally unwise when one is a high profile attorney. You need to be Secretary of State and moving up.

Agree on all points except one (very minor) one. To wit; “the Parachutist Badge (Often called the Novice Parachutist Badge)”. They aren’t called that by them that wear ’em by cracky. Those are “AIRBORNE WINGS”! And those who ain’t got ’em ain’t sh…….. Well, you know the rest.

Of course that’s as opposed to the Senior Parachutist Badge which is worn by those who jumped enough to prove they were tough but not enough to prove that they were masochists. Or at least that’s our story and we’re sticking to it.

    Sua Sponte.

And then there are those of us who jumped enough for the master blaster wings, but flunked JM school. Three times. Or was it four? Memories dim.

        1. Hognose Post author

There are several ways to fail JM school. One commander of 10th SFG(A) prided himself on a school so tough that almost no one passed it. One class, no one passed the Jumpmaster Personnel Inspection (JMPI) phase, and so there was no jump week.

I failed JMPI twice, and in the aircraft once. I released a bundle and then a jumper without ostentatiously showing that I checked that the bundle was clear.

We have a book about phonies from the Vietnam War, Rostislav: Stolen Valor. It starts with the story of how the last several “living veterans” of our Civil War (which took place from 1861-65) were all exposed as fakes! I have heard of the French and Germans having the problem, also. They are so common in Britain that soldiers have a term for them: “Walts,” after Walter Mitty, a short-story character who daydreamed always about being a hero as he went about his boring life.

      It is universal, I think.

The story is here, by the way. Don’t be thrown by some of the English aviation, medical, etc. vocabulary: the writer, James Thurber is just making it up.
      http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1939/03/18/the-secret-life-of-walter-james-thurber

The story was made into a bad and more or less unrelated movie in 2013.

But Walter Mitty was not a wannabe, because he kept his fantasies to himself. That’s what makes him such an entertaining character.

Most of these guys don’t keep their fantasies to themselves. They can’t shut up about them — unless in the company of real veterans, and sometimes, not then.

Usually it is some guy talking shit in a bar. Occasionally you get a power-seeking snake like Gresham.

      1. DaveP

Your acquaintance with Mr. Thurber does you credit. Allow me to recommend the earlier, B&W ‘Secret Life of Walter Mitty ‘ (Danny Kaye and Boris Karloff!) as worthy of your time.

Mental illness? Dunno. These guys never seem to be happy to be honorably-discharged Joe Schmo. We had a cook, SP5, back in the day that supported us at all hours. The guy was plugged-in; middle of the night, crashing out to the klaxons & there he was at the bottom of the stairs handing out 2 pieces of French Toast enclosing an egg & big sausage pattie, the original walk-away. He would find us in the boonies with the best chow he could rustle up. That was service; we’d have killed for that guy.

    1. Sommerbiwak

I hope this cook has been recognized for his exemplary service. An army marches on its stomach Napoleon is said to have said.

More recognition and appreciation for the good support personnel! When they do their jobs well, they are often taken for granted. Which is unfair.

      1. bloke_from_ohio

The only uniformed support troops I have seen near chow recently have been angry E6 and E7s wandering around the DFAC making sure no one puts their hat on the table. I once overheard one grumble to a fellow “cover wearing lunch monitors” about not being able to keep us from putting our elbows on the table. The guys doing the cooking and serving are all TCNs.

In that second photo notice who the other two ass clowns are:

The thing that always comes to my mind whenever I encounter these people is a quote from Robert Heinlein’s The Notebooks of Lazarus Long:

“This sad little lizard told me that he was a brontosaurus on his mother’s side. I did not laugh; people who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them. Humoring them costs nothing and adds to happiness in a world in which happiness is always in short supply.”

This is the attitude I take whenever I encounter those who are obviously delusional and who remain harmless, like the homeless woman who told me she’d run top secret missions for the CIA off of aircraft carriers, and that she’d been fully trained as a Green Beret. With her, I was sort of in awe at her versimilitude and imagination; she was old enough that had she actually done all that, it would have been in the Korean War. Her stories were set in the “not too long ago”, with Saddam and Osama bin Laden as her targets.

Thing that threw me was that she sounded really convincing about the whole thing, like she was channeling some real guy who’d done stuff like that–She had all the language down, and knew specifically which carriers had been where at the time. I have no idea where she learned all that, or if it was simply idiot-savant level brilliance. I heard her out, bought her a cup of coffee, and kept the waitress/hostess at the restaurant I found her at from harassing her too much. Memorable encounter–So obviously fake, but… Wow. Usually, you run into these freaks, and it’s some kid who obviously never served a day in his life cadging change to “get home” after some bad deal, claiming to have been at Fallujah or something.

I’m tolerant of the mentally ill making these claims; it’s common, and I think an indicator that the damaged/inoperable person making the claim is trying to connect to reality, somehow. Plus that, there’s a bit of “There, but for the Grace of God, go I…”, as the fragility of human sanity and cognizance is something I’m rather unfortunately aware of.

The swindlers, like this Gresham character that Hognose is highlighting? F**k them, with an appropriately rusty sawzall blade. It’s one thing to be nuts and claiming to be the modern-day equivalent of Napoleon, and another entirely to use the accomplishments of others to engage in self-benefiting fraud.

    Thank Hognose!
When a person pretends to be “special forces” in the course of a dispute – this can be understood.
When a person pretends to be “special forces” for the sake of personal gain – this is disgusting.
When a person pretending to be a “hero of the special forces” receives dominion – it is scary.
If it will be interesting :).
Here is a man whom I called “sewer commandos” :). Goes on the first two points.
    samlib.ru/k/kombat_n/
Patriot writer with a crowd of admirers, carelessly tried to teach me to love the motherland correctly.
    At the same time presents:
An officer with the naval education (weapons officer of the submarine).
He served as a conscript in the army special forces.
In 1979, he was released early from the academy, quote, “Take the house on the hill”
Later, back on the submarines with awards.
He retired and fought in local conflicts.
In 1994 he was called upon to form a battalion of Special Forces of Internal Troops.

It was very stupid … I said:
    1. In the “Muslim battalion” Major Halbaeva in (future 154 detachment for special purposes) was not ethnic Slavs even among the officers, except for one person – the commander of the anti-aircraft platoon.
    2. Well, let you Tajik or Uzbek :). But, what tasks can carry out naval officer during the assault on the palace of Amin?
    3. Muslim battalion “Taj-Bek” not stormed, he blocked the guard barracks and captured objects in the city. Stormed troops the KGB “, the Muslims they were transported to the BMP.
Conclusion: You released early from the academy that you got into the Palace of scuba diving through the sewers? As a Japanese ninja and tried to stab Amin diving knife into the anus?

The man continues to lie. And I took apart all his statements. :)

But this man is generally harmless.
A striking example of point №3 – the commander of the battalion “Donbass” Grishin / Semenchenko. “Lieutenant Ukrainian Navy” – expelled from the academy for theft. The thief, a crook, a murderer – and now member of parliament, rapists and murderers defender of “Tornado” battalion. Few people child rape front of his mother, recorded on phones. But this bastard does not see in it anything wrong.

      Didn’t see the duplicate, Rostislav.

Internet is of course a creation of evil US military-industrial complex. WWW part is a creation of a Briton living in Switzerland — if that’s not capitalist, what is?
